The Best Drive in Queensland

**Breathtaking**  is the word for the drive to Port Douglas from Cairns.

The road meanders aloRoad to Portng the coast with picture postcard views as you round every corner. Stop along the way to ‘take it all in’ and see the hang gliders aloft at Rex Lookout and the spectacular view to the south.

Heading north, Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas appear to be hovering on the horizon…you’ll be there soon!

Morning or afternoon tea at Thala Beach Lodge just 10 mins south of Port Douglas  is a must do. A Devonshire Tea or a Cocktail is the order of the day while you absorb the view out to the Coral Sea and  Double Island from the comfy chairs on the verThala Beach 4andah.

Sunday is a good day to take the drive to “Port” as it is affectionately known. The markets in the park near the quaint St Mary’s by the Sea Chapel, are one of the best mixes of craft and local produce or just work on the choice of where to have lunch. Undoubtedly, this will be your hardest decision of the day.

port dougals markets Just before the crushing season, the cane fields along the way are a sea of soft waving cane flowers waiting for the harvest between June and November. You’ll see the cane train lines follow the road as you travel further north to the sleepy town of Mossman.
